Section 6:

Managing Expectations

One of the biggest sources of conflict is unrealistic expectations.

Reality Check

Many players dream of:

  • Provincial rugby
  • University rugby
  • Professional rugby
  • International rugby

There is nothing wrong with dreaming.

But expectations must be balanced with reality.

Healthy Expectations

Focus on:

  • Daily habits
  • Effort
  • Improvement
  • Character

Not outcomes.

Unhealthy Expectations

Obsessing over:

  • Team selection
  • Rankings
  • Scholarships
  • Contracts

These are often outside a player's control.

Parent Mindset Shift

Replace:

"How far can my child go?"

With:

"How much can my child grow?"

This creates a healthier environment.
