Section 5:

Understanding Motivation

Many parents unknowingly become external motivators.

Examples:

  • Rewards
  • Bribes
  • Pressure
  • Threats

Examples

"If you score, we'll buy you something."

"If you don't make the team, no holiday."

These approaches rarely create long-term motivation.

Better Motivation

Help players connect rugby to:

  • Enjoyment
  • Personal growth
  • Team contribution
  • Self-improvement

Ask:

  • What do you enjoy most?
  • What are you working on?
  • What are your goals?

The Difference

External Motivation

"I play because my parents expect it."

Internal Motivation

"I play because I love improving."

Internal motivation lasts much longer.
