Section 2:

What Young Rugby Players Need Most

Parents often think players need:

  • Better coaching
  • More training
  • Better schools
  • Better opportunities

These matter.

But research consistently shows young athletes need three psychological needs met.

Need 1: Competence

Players need to feel:

"I am improving."

Notice:
Not "I am the best."

Improvement matters more than comparison.

Helpful Parent Language

Instead of:

❌ "Why didn't you make the first team?"

Say:

✅ "What part of your game improved this season?"

Instead of:

❌ "How many tries did you score?"

Say:

✅ "What did you learn today?"

Need 2: Connection

Young athletes perform better when they feel:

  • Supported
  • Understood
  • Accepted

This means:

  • Listening more
  • Lecturing less

Simple Rule

When your child talks about rugby:

Spend 80% of the conversation listening.

Only 20% talking.

Need 3: Autonomy

Autonomy means ownership.

Players need to feel:

"This is my rugby journey."

Not:

"This is my parents' rugby project."

Parents should avoid:

  • Contacting coaches unnecessarily
  • Solving every challenge
  • Managing every decision

Growth happens when young people learn responsibility.
